Since
the web GIS & assessment database went live, the number of abatement
requests have dropped significantly, and people who do file for an abatement
seem to be more educated from using the site. A lot of that has to do with
the comparable property link which brings up properties within the taxing
district that have comaprable real estate sales from FY05. The table was put
together by the Assessing Dept. |

The
system has been VERY successful. We have heard no complaints as to the
availability of data in terms of privacy, only when data is out of date, as
it is now. Town staff, residents, surveyors, engineering firms, real
estate, etc, etc. all use the site and complain if it goes down. |

owner names appear. Even public safety. This is only a problem if
you call them out as being public safety, which we don't do. I've heard
several towns go to great lengths to not display the names of public safety
personnel on their WebGIS sites saying it's against the law. I checked
with our Town Clerk, who said it's only against the law if you identify them
as being public safety personnel. Seems a fine distinction, however I
suppose by not having a name show up at all, where it does for everyone else
in Town, might just as well announce that a cop lives there. |

The
property data system creates the image that the Town is progressive and full
disclosure oriented. The service cuts
down on counter traffic and telephone calls.
I think is also reduces the number of abatement applications because
people are more aware that that their assessment is in line with their
neighbors etc. |

The
system benefits the community by giving full access to any interested
party thereby increasing the publics' faith in our
assessments. (We must not be trying to hide anything if we're
letting everyone look at the assessments). The appraisers,
real estate agents and insurance agents love it. It has cut down
counter and phone traffic. Hatfield is a small community and I've
noticed a reduction. |
