Service and Facilities4I am not sure this is the strategy number this would fit under. But I am wondering about the upkeep and improvement of our public schools include greening methods, IE. solar hot water, live roofs, gardens, lighting, indoor plants, etc. I would also wonder if there is an incentive for the apartment complexes to join in these efforts. For example Mill Valley would be a great place for solar powered hot water as the water is used not only for personal use but to heat the apartments. The idea of improving what we already have in place and bring it up to speed on the initiatives to become a green community.8/17/2007 11:08:31 AM
Housing57I live in the Boulders/Mill Valley area which is surrounded by single family housing. I believe a pathway through this area connecting Crocker Farm Elementary School to the east, Pomeroy Lane area to the south and the bike trail to the north (giving access to Hampshire Mall and Route 9 stores) would encourage less use of cars, support families who choose public transportation, and increase health of the residents providing a walk/bikeway through and around these areas.8/17/2007 10:52:06 AM
Housing28Cluster housing in rural, less-developed parts of Amherst is just another form of sprawl. High density housing needs to be near services, stores, bus stops and infrastructure. Putting a bunch of housing units far from services simply creates more traffic and eats up open land in a different way. Intense residential housing far from services simply justifies the next round of building stores, gas stations, etc. near them, leading to inevitable infill. Even near Amherst's town center and village centers there are many open lands and hiking trails for people to use. It's a much better use of land, energy efficient and socially intereactive to put new, cluster housing near a village center or downtown. We have many good examples of this -- and spaces for this housing. We also have many poor situations of apartment houses stuck in less developed areas now arguing for stores to be built near them.8/10/2007 9:16:20 AM
Service and Facilities21New sidewalks in busy areas that currently have no sidewalks should be a priority. Thus, I wish that this item (the only mention of sidewalks in the service and facilities category) included "expanding sidewalks into new parts of town," rather than only supporting the maintenance and repair of sidewalks in the sidewalk plan.8/8/2007 4:15:44 PM
